Dangerously Delicious Brownies that Come with a Warning

Updated: Sep 27, 2022

These brownies come with a warning! These are Espresso Brownies and they contain a lot of caffeine and for someone like myself that is caffeine sensitive, it can have pretty intense feelings with it like increased anxiety, jitters, heart palpitations, and other symptoms. But if you have a late-night studying, or at the office, then this is the brownie for you! It’s chocolate packed and the bittersweet glaze balances the sweetness of the brownie.

I found this delicious recipe on the Better Homes and Gardens website (so you know it has to be good).

1.) Line a 13x9x2-inch baking pan with foil, extending foil over the edges of the pan. Grease foil (I use a lot of cooking spray and I also suggest that you smooth out the foil as much as possible so you don’t get any in the brownies); set pan aside. Melt butter and unsweetened chocolate in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Cool mixture to room temperature. DO NOT MICROWAVE THE CHOCOLATE TO SOFTEN IT!!! (at best it will burn and at worse, you’ll start a fire. I’m not even joking, my dorm was evacuated because someone tried to make fondue this way…needless to say, everyone hated her for the rest of the semester).

2.) Meanwhile, in a medium bowl stir together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a large mixing bowl beat eggs, sugar, espresso powder, coffee liqueur, and vanilla with an electric mixer until combined (If you don’t have an electric mixer you can always use a whisk). Beat in cooled chocolate mixture. Add flour mixture, stirring just until combined. Spread batter evenly in the prepared pan.

3.) Bake in a 350-degree F oven for 25 to 30 minutes until the top appears set and dry. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Pour Chocolate Glaze evenly over brownies. Cover and chill for about 2 hours until the glaze is set.

4.) Before serving, let stand at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes. Use foil to lift brownies out of the pan. Cut into bars. If desired, garnish with chocolate-covered coffee beans. Makes 48 brownies.
