How to Make Mermaid Salt Scrub

Growing up I adored anything about the ocean or mermaids. My family didn’t have a pool, but when my mom would set up a little kid pool in the backyard I basically lived in it. I still LOVE the ocean and while I don’t think mermaids are real anymore if they were, they’d LOVE this salt scrub!

If you have a “little mermaid” at your home, and you’re looking to do something fun during this time of social distancing, you are in luck! I’m an adult and I adore how this salt scrub turned out. It’s fun with it’s cute ocean blue color, it’s a great exfoliant (which helps my poor hands with all this handwashing that has had to happen lately) and the coconut oil makes it silky soft. Lastly, how it smells is completely up to you. Whatever you think of as a tropical smell you can create.

Also, because it’s super easy and fun to make, it would be perfect for future kid parties where everyone could make their own Mermaid salt scrub! All you need to have on hand to make this is the following:

1. 1 cup sea salt (coarse or fine) coarse sea salt is great for those with oily skin, while fine sea salt is better for those with sensitive, dry skin.

2. 1/2 cup coconut oil OR avocado oil

3. a few drops of your favorite essential oil (coconut essential oil or pineapple essential oil would work really well here!)

4. 1 drop blue food coloring (optional) if you choose to forego the food coloring, your DIY mermaid salt scrub will just be white!

1. In a medium-sized bowl, mix all ingredients together until well combined. Be sure to add the coloring one drop at a time to ensure that it’s not too dark. (this is lots of fun for kids and to make it a little cleaner you can have them wear gloves while mixing).

2. Scoop into a clean, airtight jar. A mason jar will work just fine and if you’re doing this with a lot of kids you can put their name on the lid.

3. In the shower, rub the scrub onto wet skin and scrub in slow, circular motions, but do not use on open wounds, or after shaving since the salt will sting.

4. Focus on rougher parts such as elbows, knees, and feet. This is also great to use on your hands during a mermaid manicure!

5. Rinse off and pat dry.

6. Use twice a week to get clear, soft, glowing mermaid skin!

Fair warning though, this does not feel good on freshly shaved skin, so if you’re going to shave your legs, you might want to wait a day before using it or you might end up with a nasty skin from the salt.

Even if you don’t have kids to make this with, it’s nice to make something that is just full of FUN and I feel like this is all of that.
