How to Make Slow Cooker Bourbon Apple Butter for Fall

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

Once a year my parents use to take my sisters and me to Pennsylvania to see my grandmother. In the back of her home, she grew apple trees and she would make apple chips and canned apple butter. In Florida, we didn’t really have apple butter, or at least it wasn’t really kept in our home pantry, so it was truly special to have. September is the start of the fall season so why not embrace it with this tantalizing Bourbon apple butter!

This is one of my favorite fall foods to have. I love waking up and having that on toast or an English muffin. It also goes incredibly well on an Apple Butter Chicken that I’m sure to post about in a week. The most time-consuming part of this is peeling and coring all the apples. I would recommend doing this on a Saturday where you can stir it from time to time as well as enjoy the delicious way your kitchen will smell as it cooks! For this recipe you will need the following:

5 pounds any sweet apple, peeled, cored, and diced small (1/4-inch dice) I like to use Fuji apples because they are sweet and perfect for this. Granny Smith’s aren’t recommended.

2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 cup good quality Kentucky Bourbon (we used Jim Beam)

¼ cup of water

1 cup brown sugar, packed

½ cup apple liquor or apple juice

2 tablespoons molasses

2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon allspice

¼ teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

½ teaspoon salt

1.) Peel your apples and core them. I like to use this Apple Cutter after I peel them to make the job easier.

2.) Place your apples, bourbon, and all other ingredients into your crockpot or slow cooker.

3.) Place the lid on it and set a timer on low for 8 hours. Stirring occasionally after the first two hours.

4.) Use an immersion blender to break up the soft apples and make it into an apple sauce consistency.

5.) Put it on high for four hours stirring and testing it after every hour.

6.) Once you’re done you can either can it (using the water bath method) or put it in a container and store it in your fridge for up to a week.

2020 has been weird, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take opportunities to have a nice life and make nice memories right? I think life is made up of little things. Why not enjoy this little thing that you can take your time making and eating! I hope you really love this recipe and it makes the starting of the fall season fun. Have a wonderful day! -Heather Astaneh
