Crystal of the Month: Malachite

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

Thanksgiving this year can be a bit difficult. 2020 was full of things that we didn’t really want, so it’s understandable if finding things to be thankful for is coming at a premium. However, no matter how negative things are, there are always things to be thankful for, and the Crystal Malachite is perfect if you’re trying to find what those things are to you.

I’ve only seen this stone polished, and its soothing green ring pattern was nice. However, I recently had the opportunity to buy a raw Malachite crystal, and I have to say I think I like it a lot more. It resembles a green shag rug with strands of crystals bunching up to make little peaks. Looking at it, it looked a lot like velvet as it softened the light into different directions. It looks fuzzy, and maybe that’s a good way of summarizing this crystal’s metaphysical qualities as “Warm Fuzzies.”

First and foremost, I should say that this crystal can actually be PHYSICALLY DANGEROUS. I have to be really careful when meditating with my raw Malachite crystal and even have to go as far as washing my hands after handling it. This is because it has over a 50% copper content, which makes it toxic if ingested or inhaled…and because the tiny crystals on this are so tiny, it’s easy for it to rub off on you. This is a crystal YOU SHOULD NOT MAKE ELIXERS WITH unless you can do so in a way that prevents the Malachite from touching the water directly. Breathing in the dust even once can cause life long health issues like damage to the endocrine and central nervous systems.

That main point aside, this crystal is still stunning and has many mental and emotional benefits so long as you handle it with care. Despite being dangerous in powder form, it was often used as eye shadows during the time of ancient greeks. The green color and cylindrical pattern design are calming to the eyes. Remember, green is the primary color in nature. While the color green can be associated with envy or jealousy, it’s also a color that naturally relaxes us (which is why hospitals can sometimes have green walls). It’s also associated with abundance, which might be while American currency has a “green” color to it. So merely looking at this crystal can tap into our psychology and bring a calming effect.

In terms of the metaphysical, this crystal is primarily a protective stone. It absorbs negative energies and pollutants and is believed to guard against radiation and electromagnetic pollution. It’s believed that if you suffer from anxiety that Malachite might be helpful. It’s believed that the crystal balances mood swings and helps the user feel better dealing with anxiety or depression. It’s said that Malachite “encourages change and emotional risk-taking,” which might be what you need if you’re dealing with anxiety or depression. It breaks life patterns that might keep you from being your best self and help build empathy, which might help deal with anger. It also can give you the strength to take more power and responsibility for yourself and your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to make better choices to live a better, more fore-filling life.

I chose this stone for November because, in America, we have the holiday of Thanksgiving, where we are to take time to reflect on the things we are thankful for. This has been a challenging year to do that, with everything from injustice, politics, religion, finances, and even health being uncertain. It can make finding things to be really tough. However, because of its deep green color, Malachite is practically dedicated to the heart chakra (which is represented by green). It’s believed that this crystal can help release emotional blockages in regards to the heart. Since it’s able to help balance your emotions and clear out negativity, it might help you to be able to take stock in what HAS gone well for you. Maybe you’ve lost your job this year, but the plus side is that you have time to consider if you even liked that kind of work in the first place. Maybe you have gotten sick this year; perhaps now you see how much your body and your health are worth (something we can all take for granted at times). Maybe while your family is annoying, you find yourself being grateful that you’re not alone, or if you are alone, perhaps you find gratefulness in that you can connect with yourself and your needs better. There is always a bright side to every problem, and meditating with Malachite might help bring those to the surface.

If you are a Taurus or have Taurus energy in your chart, this crystal is for you. Think about what makes bulls happy; nice lush green fields to graze in. This deep lush green crystal reminds a Taurus of their “down to earth connection.”

So if you find that you’re having difficulty knowing what you need for yourself, finding and being thankful for the little nuggets of joy in our lives, or find yourself emotionally blocked, it might be time to sit down with a piece of Malachite and see just what comes to mind. I hope this helps, and as always, I’m still learning about crystals. If you have a great experience with this crystal that you want to share, please leave a comment below.
