How to Make a Blue Hawaiian For The 4th of July

Updated: Dec 24, 2023

This was the first mixed drink I made when I started to get into the art of making mixed drinks. Growing up in Florida, the only drinks I really knew were touristy mixed drinks. I’m not saying you can’t have a Manhattan or a Cosmopolitan in Florida, but the subtropical climate almost demands something refreshing and fruity. This embodies everything you want in a sweat refreshing drink that you can enjoy by a pool with your burger.

Even if you’re making just simple burgers like my mom did they are bound to go really well with this Caribean blue drink flavored with the taste of Rum, Curacao, pineapple juice, and Coconut milk. The good news is that all you need is a Shaker which is something anyone who is dabbling in the art of bartending will need at one point.  Even if you don’t have a pool, chill out in your tub and drink this and I’m sure you’ll feel right as rain by the time you reach the bottom of the glass *wink*.

1oz light Rum

1oz Blue Curacao

3oz Pineapple Juice

3/4oz Cream of Coconut (I used Full Fat Coconut Milk and it worked just fine)

For the Garnish, a cool stir stick, a maraschino cherry, and chunk or two of pineapple (I actually used the pineapple chunks you get from a can), and an edible flower.

1.) Combine Light Rum, Blue Curacao, Pineapple Juice, and Cream of Coconut in a cocktail shaker. (This is part of the fun of drink making).

2.) Add about a 1/2 cup of ice and shake until the outside of your shaker is cold. I actually found this Bartending Video on the right way to shake a shaker so your arm doesn’t get tired, because trust me, when you make one you’re going to have to make one for everyone….or maybe you just want a lot…It’s 2020, I’m not judging.

3.) Fill your hurricane glass with ice. If you don’t have a hurricane glass, like me, any glass will do.

4.) Pour your mixture into your glass. (obviously)

5.) Decorate with a slice of pineapple, Maraschino cherry, and a tropical drink umbrella. If you don’t have a fancy little umbrella you can either Buy a MASSIVE box of them here, or you can use a toothpick and just stick the items on, or just throw them on top.

I hope you’re now enjoying a delicious and intoxicating drink that is going to blow anyone’s beer out of the pool water. As I said, I don’t have a pool, so I make one of these, put on some good music and take a nice long bath. It’s all about having fun. This isn’t a stuffy drink but it sure is fun and that’s all I want you to have here is fun. If you loved this, tell me in the comments below. If all you do is come here to read something fun and get inspired that’s absolutely fine too and I hope you find what you’re looking for. Have a great day and a happy 4th! -Heather Astaneh
