How to Make this Mermaid Lagoon Smoothie Bowl

Updated: Dec 24, 2023

Summer in my mind is all about eating healthy, and I know sometimes when the mornings are hot, I want a breakfast that’s not. One thing that is not only nutritious but delicious is this Mermaid Lagoon Smoothie Bowl. It tastes just like a Banana smoothie but is made healthy with the addition of Spirulina and Whey Protein. If you want to channel your inner Mermaid you MUST try this smoothie!

Growing up in Florida it seemed like my parents always had the Air Conditioner on full blast. When I think back to those times I can remember being a bit sad that Florida was all about the heat and beaches and ocean and yet I was very much stuck in my house with a cold Air being blown. Now as an adult with a place of my own, I really hesitate to turn on the A/C unless it’s sweltering outside. I like the warmth because, for six months out of the year, Massachusetts is a popsicle.

The drawback to this is sometimes we have warm humid nights that turn into warm humid mornings that just make you crave something fresh and cold. That’s where this Mermaid Smoothie comes in. It’s delicious with the taste of banana, but it’s also a healthy way to drink that protein smoothie that may taste more like chalk than vanilla.

The green Mermaid Lagoon color comes from Spirulina. I bought a container of this when I went to do my Green Goddess Spirulina Face Mask. After that post though, I still had a lot of powder leftover and I was really curious about how to use it in a smoothie. For those who don’t know, Spirulina is an organism that lives in both salt and fresh water and something that both animals and humans can consume. You’ve also probably heard it referred to as blue-green algae and it’s amazingly high in protein and antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. There are tons of articles online talking about how amazing this food actually is.

Not only is Spirulina healthy, but it’s what gives this smoothie is green lagoon glow. Top it all off with some granola, frozen fruit, nuts, coconut, and chia seeds and you’re bound to be feeling good till lunch for sure! Also, as a side note, it’s a real attention grabber on Instagram! So to get this gorgeous smoothie just follow the instructions below!

I got this smoothie recipe from The Glowing Fridge.

How to Make this Mermaid Lagoon Smoothie Bowl by autumnbecomes.me

  1. 3 ripe bananas, sliced and frozen

  2. 1/2 ripe avocado

  3. 1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

  4. 1 scoop vanilla plant-based vegan protein powder

  5. 1/2 teaspoon raw spirulina powder

I also used:

Frozen fruit (mainly Blackberries and Raspberries)

Vanilla Granola

A little sweetened coconut

and Chia seeds

1.) Remove frozen bananas from the freezer and let them sit on the counter for 5-10 minutes to defrost a bit. They should have been sliced and frozen in a bag/container for at least 4 hours prior.

2.) Add all ingredients (except the toppings) to a high-speed blender and slowly pulse/blend until thick and creamy, like an ice cream consistency. It will take a few minutes; do not add more liquid unless you want it to be thinner and soupy.

3.) Transfer to a bowl, top with your favorite toppings, and enjoy!

This was absolutely delicious and of course, I had to take pictures for my Instagram. I hope you have a lot of fun making this and decorating it. If you do make this please be sure to tag me. I LOVE to see the different ways people have decorated these bowls as well as get feedback on how it tasted. I wish you a splashingly good morning! -Heather Astaneh
